Well, three weeks after the implementation of the Explorer Destroyer script, I have decided to remove it. During the period of its existence, I only managed to convert one user to Firefox. That’s only $0.50 earned, and only one person saved from the grasp of the vile IE7. After looking at the analytics statistics for this site, it appears that most of my users use Firefox anyway.
One large gripe I have with Explorer Destroyer is that somehow, when Google indexed my pages, it read Explorer Destroyer’s message as the meta/description for my pages. This means that instead of helpful excerpts or titles, on most of my pages Google results show only “Get firefox now, …” I don’t know how long it will take the big G to recrawl my pages and update them as such, but as far as I can see, Explorer Destroyer may have dented what little search engine ranking and traffic this blog has. Although it’s possible this happened because of bad code insertion or a WordPress theme compatibility problem, all of the instructions were followed.
Even though I had a bad experience with Explorer Destroyer, it doesn’t mean that the above malady will affect all sites or that it never leads to referrals. It will simply suffice to say that ED is a great script with a great purpose for some sites, but EarnOverTheWeb will no longer use it.
